We're staying in Flagstaff -- not as upscale as Sedona and more like a college town, but we like it, especially the big pines which remind me of the Adirondacks. The drive up to the Canyon was beautiful -- aspens intermixed with the evergreens. We had the road almost entirely to ourselves. This was a perfect day -- cool and clear -- for the view.
Standing on the edge of the south rim of the Grand Canyon is like standing in front of a heaven-sized postcard. The view doesn't seem real, yet it is. Layers and layers of sand dunes which were once covered, then uncovered and carved away by the Colorado River stand over form the banks of a mile-deep canyon. To me, this view is right up there with swimming in the Great Barrier Reef -- truly remarkable. As Allen put it, we are reminded that our time here is just a breath compared to the sediment of the Grand Canyon.
Arizona has become one of my favorite states. Rent the video if you cannot make the trip!
